Police and forensic experts will today search a residential property in South Australia’s mid-north in a bid to locate the remains of a man who was murdered in 2005.
Martin Meffert was last seen in February 2005 on a bus going to Terowie.
In October 2013, police conducting a routine inquiry at a house on Packer Street, Terowie, discovered the partial skeletal remains of the 23-year-old in a bag in the property.
Police arrested and charged a Terowie man with Mr Meffert’s murder in September last year, with the accused pleading guilty to the charge earlier this week.
He has yet to be sentenced.
Investigators have conducted several searches over the years since Mr Meffert’s partial remains were located.
Inspector Billy Thompson, the acting officer in charge of the SA Police Major Crime Investigation Branch, said police were hopeful of being able to find the remainder of Mr Meffert’s remains today.
“For police returning a person’s remains to their family is as important as any other task associated with a murder inquiry,” he said.
“Long-running inquiries such as this are not ‘over’ until that has been achieved because we know how important it is for the families to finally lay their loved one to rest.”
Police are today being assisted by experts from Forensic Science South Australia.
