Thank God I’m country horse

The first event for the highly anticipated Country Championships kicks off today, with regional trainers and owners gearing up to compete for some serious prize money and a shot at the big time.

Minister for Racing Kevin Anderson said the Country Champs at Tuncurry-Forster racetrack is a huge start to a big championship series.

“Racing is back in a big way and there is no better way to welcome the Autumn carnival than with the start of the Country Championships, giving country horses, trainers and owners their time to shine on the big stage,” Mr Anderson said.

“The Country Championships consists of nine races from the different racing districts in NSW, drawing together the best regionally trained horses. Not only is this good for the industry, it provides direct economic stimulus into regional towns which in turn supports crucial employment.

“Thoroughbred racing is a way of life for many people in regional communities, whether that’s a day out at the track with friends and family, or whether you are one of the 14,000 people in regional NSW who are employed because of this industry.”

Mr Anderson said the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is committed to supporting regional racing as the industry continues to go from strength to strength in NSW.

“The NSW Government allocated $67 million to upgrade regional racetracks as part of the Racing for the Regions package. We know that regional NSW is home to some of the best horses, trainers and owners in the State so it makes sense they also have the best possible facilities,” Mr Anderson said.

The Country Championships will see races held at Tuncurry-Forster, Coffs Harbour, Mudgee, Albury, Tamworth, Moruya, Coonamble, Goulburn and Scone.

The grand final will be held on Day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick, putting regional horses and connections on the map.

Congratulations to Racing NSW and all regional trainers, owners and connections for keeping this fantastic event going.
