Thieves Target Volunteer Fire Brigades

Police are investigating a burglary and stealing from the Weymouth Fire Station that occurred at around 10pm, Friday 3 January 2020.

Thieves entered the volunteer station, situated on Weymouth Road, and stole a base-station radio transceiver. The neighbouring Pipers River station was also targeted, but entry was not gained to the station.

Inspector Adam Mollineaux of North East Division said the theft was particularly callous, given the current bushfire situation nationally and locally.

“We have bushfires burning across the country, including here in Tasmania. Emergency services and local volunteer brigades such as Weymouth and Pipers River are preparing for another very high fire danger day tomorrow and something like this happens – it beggars belief.”

Members of the public who saw any person(s) or vehicle(s) acting suspiciously in the vicinity of Weymouth Road, Weymouth, or School Road Pipers River on Friday evening or has any other information that may assist the investigation are asked to contact George Town Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
