Think Twice About Asbestos

The City of Stonnington has joined hundreds of organisations across Australia in recognising National Asbestos Awareness Week (20-26 November).

Residents and tradespeople are reminded to Think Twice About Asbestos, by ensuring the proper and lawful disposal of asbestos.

Asbestos fibres are strong, heat resistant particles that have insulating properties. Australia banned the use and import of asbestos-containing products in the mid-1980s, and a total ban on the deadly product was implemented in 2003.

An estimated 4000 Australians still die annually from asbestos-related diseases, due to the product still being present in millions of homes, as well as public and commercial buildings. In fact, many buildings constructed before 1990, and one in three homes still contain asbestos.

The City of Stonnington is encouraging residents, landlords, homeowners and tradespeople to do things the right way when it comes to the safe disposal of asbestos and stay vigilant to the health risks this toxic material poses to community and Council.

People working on homes built before 1990 can find out how to remove and dispose of asbestos the right way by contacting a licensed asbestos professional or seeking advice from Asbestos Victoria
