Thirty new townhouses in Canberra’s south ready for tenants

Thirty new public housing homes are ready for tenants to move in with construction completed in Calwell.

“These 30 much needed homes are ready to welcome tenants and families most in need of housing support,” said Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry.

“Work started on this project in November 2022and the construction took less than nine months. This clearly demonstrates the positive outcomes that can be achieved when Government and industry work together, to deliver for our community.” she said.

The 30 two and three-bedroom townhouses are built to Class C Adaptable standards, which means they can be easily adapted to meet changing accessibility needs and support tenants to remain at home as they grow older.

The new homes are close to schools, shops, services and transport and add to the category of public housing in highest demand, with approximately 80 per cent of all housing applicants able to be housed a two-bedroom dwelling.

More than 500 homes have been delivered under the Government’s commitment and another 700 homes are currently underway in design or construction.

Today’s announcement is another step towards providing more people in need with public housing that is safe and secure.
