Thousands of jobs created in ACT in 2019

With more than 7,700 new jobs created in the ACT in 2019, as well as one of the lowest unemployment

levels in the country – Canberra has become one of the best places in the country to get a good job.

The ACT Government has worked hard in recent years to create more jobs for more Canberrans. Despite the Liberal’s decentralisation agenda ripping jobs out of Canberra, the ACT Government has been creating jobs by investing in major infrastructure projects and hiring more nurses and teachers to support our growing city.

The improvement in the ACT’s jobs market comes as the national unemployment rate increased in the month of October, with overall employment across the country also falling.

There is more work to do, and the Government plans on continuing to create more, secure jobs as our city grows.

The ACT Infrastructure Plan outlines over $14 billion of projects that will need to be built in the years ahead. These infrastructure projects will provide hundreds of jobs for the ACT’s construction industry over the coming decade.

The Infrastructure Plan also shows how the Government will deliver on our guarantee to hire more nurses, teachers, doctors and city rangers to provide the public services that Canberrans rely on.

Job security is also important for many Canberra families, and that’s why the Government is doing what we can to provide more Canberrans with secure employment. Recently, we offered hundreds of school cleaners the opportunity to access secure employment opportunities with the Government.

The Government has also implemented our Secure Local jobs code, which ensures that businesses tendering for ACT Government work treat their employees fairly. Since the code was introduced, over 1,200 businesses have received certificates that recognise that they do the right thing by their employees.

We know how important having a good, secure job is to Canberra families, and this Government will keep working to create more jobs and support local businesses in the ACT.
