Thousands of new citizens to call Gold Coast home

Almost 3,000 Gold Coasters will become Australian citizens at a mega ceremony today.

Mayor Tom Tate will swear in 1,455 people at 11am and 1,453 people at 3pm at two ceremonies at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, Carrara.

“It’s fantastic to see so many people choosing to become citizens and even better that they are choosing to call the Gold Coast home,” said Mayor Tom Tate.

“We’re a proud multicultural community with almost one in three residents born overseas, and we welcome every new citizen to our diverse city.

“Australian citizenship, whether by birth or by choice, is our common bond that unites us all.”

The two ceremonies are the largest ever held on the Gold Coast.

In 2019, a total of around 2,400 Gold Coasters were sworn in at City citizenship ceremonies.

On Australia Day this year, 2,400 people were sworn in as citizens at two ceremonies in Brisbane.
