Three men have been arrested following a search warrant as part of an investigation into alleged unsafe and illegal behaviour at a gathering in Mayfield earlier this month.
About 1pm on Sunday 14 June 2026, police were called to a park on Ingall Street, Mayfield, following reports of a large gathering of people.
On arrival, police found between 150-200 people had gathered in the park, while a further 30-40 people were riding unregistered trail bikes in parkland and on surrounding streets.
Streets were closed nearby, with traffic redirected due to safety concerns.
Two unregistered motorbikes were seized on the day and are undergoing forensic examination.
Police attached to Newcastle City Police District established Operation Horizon to investigate the incident.
Three men were arrested at a Wallsend home on Friday 19 June 2026. All three remain before the courts.
Following further inquiries, detectives attended a home in Jesmond about 1pm yesterday (Thursday 25 June 2026) to execute a search warrant.
During the search, police allegedly located and seized items of interest including a slingshot, taser, knuckledusters, extendable baton, flick knife, fireworks, 1.13g methamphetamine, 26.63g cocaine, 250ml cannabis resin, 157g cannabis leaf, and $3500 cash.
Three men – aged 35, 32 and 30 – were arrested at the home and taken to Waratah Police Station.
In relation to the Mayfield incident, the 35-year-old man was charged with five offences,
- Destroy or damage property (greater than $2,000 and less than or equal to $5,000)
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
- Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period
- Three or more people use violence cause fear, and
- Riot.
He was also charged with a further 21 unrelated offences,
- Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period (17 counts)
- Break and enter dwelling-house etc with intent (steal)-
- Destroy or damage property (less than or equal to $2000)
- Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, and
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.
The 30-year-old man was charged with three unrelated offences,
- Aggravated break and enter with intent
- Cultivate prohibited plant (less than or equal to small quantity), and
- Goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not motor vehicle).
An outstanding arrest warrant was also executed for alleged domestic violence-related offences.
Both men were refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Friday 26 June 2026).
The 32-year-old man was charged with 11 unrelated offences,
- Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit (five counts)
- Possess, supply or make explosive for unlawful purpose
- Supply prohibited drug, greater than indictable and less than commercial quantity (two counts)
- Possess prohibited drug (two counts), and
- Recklessly deal with proceeds of crime (less than or equal to $5000).
He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 16 July 2026.
Inquiries into the gathering are continuing under Operation Horizon.
