Tourist boost to Territory

NT Government

Visitors injected $3 billion into the Territory economy in the year ending June 2023, boosting jobs and supporting local businesses.

According to the latest National and International Visitor Survey Results, it’s a 42% growth in expenditure compared to the $2.1 billion spent in the previous year to June.

1.6 million domestic and international visitors came to the Territory during that period, an increase of 27% to the year ending June 2022.

Visitor nights increased 33%, with visitors spending a total of 12 million nights in the Territory, an average of 7.3 per visitor.

International visitor nights are up 11% on pre-pandemic levels to 3.5 million nights spent in the Territory compared to 3.2 million nights in the year ending June 2019.

This is due to the major increase in the average length of stay in the Territory, indicative of the return of working holiday maker markets.

For the first time, India has entered the top five international markets of visitors to the Northern Territory.

Domestic visitation increased by 17%, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland represent the latest interstate holiday source market, a result of our successful advertising campaigns run down south.

Overall, visitors to Central Australia were up 42% while the Top End had an increase of 24% of visitors compared to the year ending June 2022.
