Townsville police praise crowds who welcomed in 2020

Townsville police have praised the behaviour of revellers across the district who welcomed in the new year.

Large crowds gathered at vantage points around The Strand for fireworks and celebrated in clubs and pubs as well as venues within the Safe Night Precinct (SNP).

There were no reported major incidents at the fireworks with crowds dispersing quickly afterwards.

New Year’s Eve, a traditionally busy night for police across the state, saw Townsville Police out in numbers with a focus on entertainment hubs.

In the SNP police arrested one man for two counts each of public nuisance and serious assault police, as well as extending his banning notice.

One person was arrested for possession of dangerous drugs and another person arrested for drink driving.

Police issued eight banning notices and seven move-on directions, as well as issuing one liquor infringement notice, two obstruct police infringement notices and six notices for public nuisance.

Inspector Damian Irvine, Townsville Patrol Inspector said police were kept busy but he was pleased with the behaviour of the vast majority of people welcoming in 2020.
