Traffic campaign – West Daly

Northern Territory Police from Peppimenarti and Wadeye conducted a traffic campaign in the West Daly region on Friday 12 June.

Police checked a number of vehicles which were found to be unregistered, overloaded, and unroadworthy. Several people were found to be driving unlicensed and not wearing seatbelts.

A 60-year-old man was arrested for medium range drink driving, driving unlicensed, drive unregistered, and uninsured. The man blew 0.137 when tested for alcohol and was issued a notice to appear in court.

Approximately 17 people were detected committing traffic violations and acting in a disorderly manner for which infringements will be issued. Two people have been issued notices to appear in court for drive disqualified, unlicensed and drive medium range.

While vehicles were being directed into the traffic stop, police observed an unknown person throw an item from the vehicle. The item was located and consisted of four clip seal bags containing 98 grams of cannabis and a bottle spirits. Seven bottles and a three litre bag of alcohol were also seized from the same vehicle.

Approximately 15 people bound for a community were directed back to their home community after the vehicles they were travelling in were found to be in need of repairs.

Remote Sergeant Palmer said, “It was disappointing to see the number of persons who were driving whilst disqualified, unlicensed and failing to wear seatbelts. Also disappointing were the persons who attempted to smuggle drugs and alcohol into our communities. Substance abuse affects everyone, so any seizure large or small helps us keep a safer community.

“Anyone with information about persons bringing alcohol into alcohol protected areas or drugs into our communities, please call police on 131 444 or if you wish to be anonymous, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000”.
