Moving around Eltham is now safer and more accessible thanks to a newly installed set of traffic lights at the intersection of Main Road and Leane Drive as a part of the Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade.
The new traffic lights will provide more reliable travel times and get more people to where they want to be safely.
Since August, crews have been working to install traffic lights by demolishing existing kerbs, road surfaces and shared use paths.
Additional improvements to drainage, line-marking and kerbs means the upgraded intersection at Main Road and Leane Drive is safer for all road users, strengthening links to nearby community hubs.
A new pedestrian crossing also offers families a safe path to a childcare centre on Main Road and nearby Alan Marshall Reserve.
Activation of the traffic lights means crews can turn their attention to completing minor asphalting and driveway works over coming weeks. Traffic management will continue during this time.
The next priority works to get underway include upgrading the intersection at Main Road to traffic lights early next year.
The Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade will improve safety and efficiency for motorists and pedestrians in Melbourne’s north, by adding traffic lights to intersections, and walking and cycling connections to the local area. The upgrade will be crucial for the 60,000 people who drive through the area daily.
The Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade forms part of Victoria’s record multi-billion suburban road investment and is expected to be completed in 2023.
