Transforming healthcare payments for patients and providers

Commonwealth Bank is seeking to improve patient and provider experiences through an innovative healthcare solution – CommBank Smart Health.

Launched today and available on CBA’s new smart terminals, Smart Health has all major Australian private health insurers enabled to allow for an improved payments and claim experience. CBHS is a member owned not for profit health fund which is offering mobile phone pay and claim function powered by Smart Health.

CBA’s Business Bank Group Executive Mike Vacy-Lyle said: “We are transforming the patient and provider experience in Australia, with this new real-time healthcare payments and claiming solution. Smart Health is simple and easy for patients to use, and integrates the latest technology and customisable features for providers and payers.

“Health is the fastest growing and most significant sector in the Australian economy and accounts for more than 10 per cent of GDP. We want to ensure the sector is supported by a superior payments solution and today’s announcement is part of our continued efforts to deliver Australia’s best-in-class digital experience.”

CEO CommBank Health, Albert Naffah said: “CommBank Smart Health helps healthcare practitioners save time, reduce the amount of administration, and improve the payment experience, allowing them to spend more time with their patients. We are delighted to bring our vision of integrating Whitecoat’s search functionality into a patient journey where payments and claims happen seamlessly in the background.”

CommBank Smart Health features include:

  • Process private health insurance claims through one wireless device, including overseas student health cover and overseas visitors cover claims for supported funds;
  • Integration with select practice management systems: Best Practice, Dental4Windows, Optomate;
  • Same day settlements on gap payments;
  • Next business day processing on health fund contributions; and
  • Digitally capture patient consent for claims (no need to store signatures on paper).

For patients, the new features will make it easier to make digital payments and claims, receive offers and deals, have the ability to track spending, and will reduce the number of lost rebates.

Today’s launch of Smart Health follows Commonwealth Bank’s acquisition of Whitecoat – Australia’s largest digital healthcare services directory. Patients will maintain the ability to search and book with Whitecoat directory.

The Smart Health integration will be expanded to include WorkSafe Victoria claims in the coming months.

In addition to the new Smart Health terminal, CBA has established dedicated health specialists to support the personal and business banking needs of health providers and professionals.

Our banking health experts will be available from 8am to 8pm to cater for people working outside of business hours via a direct line: 1800 CBA HTH (1800 222 484).
