TRC supporting state government waste management, recycling survey

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is supportive of the Queensland Government’s survey that is seeking residents’ views on future waste management and recycling services.

TRC Water and Waste Committee portfolio leader Cr Nancy Sommerfield said survey findings would be invaluable in planning waste services and communicating various consumer behaviour change programs at the state and local government level.

Cr Sommerfield, pictured, said the survey was open until January 22, 2023. To complete the survey, visit, https://survey.confirmit.com.au/wix/p741993219426.aspx?SS=0&DLC=64385791

“The Department of Environment and Science is undertaking the survey to understand how residents are managing their household waste. Findings will help planning for future waste management,” Cr Sommerfield said.

“The Department advises that the survey is seeking to clarify key attitudes and behaviours that should be targeted to drive improved recycling and reduce contamination in waste services.

“It will provide a vital set of baseline data for both Queensland and the Toowoomba Region, which will be used in program design, and in measuring future success.”

Cr Sommerfield said Council was continuing to expand recycling options at the Region’s waste facilities.

“Council actively promotes the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling precious resources in an effort to divert more material from our landfills,” Cr Sommerfield said.

“Diverting recyclable material from landfill reduces operating costs and promotes further environmental benefits.

“Council is working to transition in line with the state government targets for 90% of our waste being reused and diverted from landfill by 2050.

“Recycling initiatives reinforce a circular economy where product streams can be recycled, repurposed or reused, for instance the use of glass in road construction.”

The survey is being undertaken by an independent research company, Enhance Research, on behalf of the Queensland Government.
