Two New Zealand citizens and a man from Fiji appeared before Fairfield Local Court today (28 August, 2026) charged with affray and assault allegedly committed at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre after an incident yesterday (27 August).
After initial inquires, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers referred the matter to AFP for further investigation.
As a result of AFP enquiries, it will be alleged the Fijian man, 26, approached the alleged victim and began to strike him as he entered a common area at the facility. It will be further alleged the two New Zealand men, aged 37 and 24, then entered the same room and kicked and struck the alleged victim multiple times before they attempted to restrain him.
All three men were arrested at Villawood in the early hours of this morning and transported to Cabramatta Police Station. They were each charged with:
One count of affray, contrary to section 93C(1) of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), as applied by section 4 of the Commonwealth Places (Administration of Laws) Act 1970 (Cth) – Law part Code 433; and
Once count of assault causing actual bodily harm in company, contrary to section 59(2) of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), as applied by section 4 of the Commonwealth Places (Administration of Laws) Act 1970 (Cth) – Law part Code 44550.
All three men were remanded in custody to appear in the Fairfield Local Court on 9 September, 2026.
The alleged victim received medical treatment on site before being transported to Auburn Hospital. He was later discharged and returned to the detention centre.
