Tropical Cyclone Tiffany Update #5 – Cyclone reforms

A Tropical Cyclone Warning remains in place for the Carpentaria coast from Cape Shield to the Queensland border.

Tropical Cyclone Tiffany reformed overnight in the Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to make landfall this afternoon south of Numbulwar as a Category 2 system.

Warning Zone: Cape Shield to NT/Qld border, including Groote Eylandt, Numbulwar, Ngukurr, Bulman, Port Roper, and Port McArthur

Watch Zone: None

Public shelters are now open on Groote Eylandt and Numbulwar. Shelters in Ngukurr will open this morning. Residents who are not able to safely shelter at home are advised to take their emergency kits with them to the shelters and put into place arrangements for care of any pets.

Public shelters are located at:

  • Angurugu School Trade Training Centre – OPEN
  • Umbakumba School Trade Training Centre – OPEN
  • Milyakburra Cyclone Shelter – OPEN
  • Numbulwar School – OPEN

The GEMCO Mess is open to GEMCO staff and Alyangula residents.

Approximately 50 people used the shelter in Numbulwar last night.

Most residents on Groote Eylandt have chosen to shelter at home with low numbers accessing the public shelters.

A storm tide is expected between the NT/Qld border and Cape Shield, including Groote Eylandt. Tides are likely to rise significantly above the normal high tide, with damaging waves and dangerous flooding between the NT/Qld border and Cape Shield, including Groote Eylandt during Wednesday and early Thursday morning.

A flood watch remains in place for North West and Carpentaria Coastal waters. Preparations are underway to manage possible flood events.

Residents are reminded to stay away from floodwaters, do not attempt to cross or drive through floodways and to be CrocWise.
