City of Logan residents can get their hands dirty and learn about the environment on Saturday, November 12, as part of National Recycling Week.

Logan City Council will host a composting and worm farm workshop at the Browns Plains Waste and Recycling Facility.

The free workshop, from noon-1pm, will provide an introduction into composting and the skills to turn leftovers, scraps and garden waste into fertiliser.

There are also sessions on managing waste and recycling correctly and the best ways to use recyclable bags. They are on from 1pm-2.30pm.

National Recycling Week is from November 7-13.

Environment Chair, Councillor Jon Raven, urged families and individuals to come along and get started on an important environmental activity.

“Composting and worm farming are hugely important for the environment and helps reduce waste and the amount of rubbish we send to landfill,” Cr Raven said.

“The more people we can equip with this knowledge, the better.”

Division 8 Councillor Jacob Heremaia said it was a great activity for all ages.

“It’s a great hobby for kids and adults to get into and this Council-run workshop is an easy way to get started,” he said.

There are also two upcycling workshops – a children’s session from 10am-11.30am, and for adults, a workshop is on from 1pm-2.30pm.

To register for all workshops, visit logan.qld.gov.au/events and search for Upcycle Recycle Day.

Council offers a $50 rebate to residents who buy an organic recycling system such as a compost bin or worm farm.

The rebate is a digital debit card which can be accessed via a smart phone.
