Turbocharging Tourism: Tender Awarded for Construction of new Nitmiluk Trails

Visitors to Nitmiluk National Park will soon be able to enjoy new walking and mountain-biking trails with a construction contract awarded to Ground Creations Pty Ltd. The project is part of the Territory Labor Government’s $5.5 million Turbocharging Tourism investment in the park.

This investment complements the $10 million previously invested in park infrastructure, which has funded a visitor centre upgrade, improvements to the steps between the first and second gorge, and a new causeway over the Katherine River. Construction of a new jetty is also underway.

This latest project includes the creation of several new mountain-biking trails that link the Gorge Tourist Precinct and the Katherine River to the existing walking trail network.

Many of the new trails will be shared-use, allowing both walkers and mountain bikers to enjoy the park.

The design of the trails, carried out by GHD, was developed in consultation with the Park’s Joint Management Board, Jawoyn Traditional Owners and Park rangers.

As noted by Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss:

“Through our Turbocharging Tourism investment into our national parks, we will attract more visitors to the Territory, create jobs and boost our economy.

“By increasing and improving the facilities, attractions and experiences on offer, we can encourage people to stay longer, spend more, and leave with fantastic memories.

“Research shows the best form of advertising for a destination is through recommendation, and in a niche market such as mountain biking, news travels fast about great trails and destinations.”

As noted by Member for Arnhem, Selena Uibo:

“The Territory Labor Government is investing in our local tourism infrastructure which will help continue to drive visitation, create a memorable experience for visitors and generate economic activity for our region.

“Nitmiluk already offers visitors an incredible experience and these new trails will provide even more ways for people to enjoy this stunning place.”
