Following the announcement of the acoustic camera trial, Council looks forward to working closely with the Environmental Protection Authority Victoria (EPA Victoria) to identify suitable locations for the installation of acoustic cameras across the municipality.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the ongoing issue of hooning and excessive vehicle noise on Port Phillip streets. Residents have consistently raised concerns about the impacts of hooning, including noise disturbance and road safety risks.
The fixed-post acoustic cameras use advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence technology to detect and record vehicles that exceed regulated noise limits. This information can be used by the EPA to determine whether to issue a Vehicle Testing Notice after confirming a vehicle has breached regulated noise levels.
Council would like to thank and congratulate the community who have strongly advocated for action on this issue. The ongoing engagement and persistence has played an important role in helping bring this trial to Port Phillip. This positive outcome reflects the value of community advocacy and collaboration in achieving meaningful change.
Council will continue to explore different avenues to address the issue of hooning and excessive vehicle noise in partnership with the Victorian government and the community.
