Dr Kathryn Austin, pictured above left, and Adjunct Professor Karen Price, above right, have been admitted to the AMA Roll of Fellows in recognition of their outstanding service to the medical profession and the AMA.
Dr Austin is an obstetrician, gynaecologist and maternal fetal medicine subspecialist whose sustained leadership, clinical excellence and advocacy have significantly advanced the interests of the medical profession and the health of the community. She holds a public appointment as a senior clinician in high-risk obstetrics at Royal North Shore Hospital and is a director of a private obstetric practice. She has also been involved in the establishment of women’s health and preconception planning services, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes.
Her engagement with the AMA spans more than a decade and includes service as a Director on the Federal AMA Board from 2014–2015, as well as extensive leadership within AMA NSW. The immediate past President of AMA NSW, Dr Austin has led advocacy on workforce sustainability, rural health and equitable representation for doctors across the state. She was the fourth female President in AMA NSW’s history and the first female specialist to hold the position.
Adjunct Professor Price has provided outstanding service to the AMA and the medical profession through a distinguished career in leadership, advocacy and policy development. A Federal Councillor, Chair of the AMA Council of General Practice and Chair of Victoria’s General Practice Policy Council, she has made a sustained contribution to strengthening the voice of general practitioners and advancing AMA policy at both state and national levels.
As a lifelong AMA member and former National President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Adjunct Professor Price has fostered a constructive and collaborative relationship between the two organisations while championing unified advocacy on behalf of doctors, patients and the health system. She is recognised nationally for her advocacy for general practice and has contributed to significant shifts in attitudes and funding that support the sustainability of the GP workforce.
A respected advocate for women in medicine, educator and mentor, Adjunct Professor Price’s influence has extended across generations of medical practitioners. Her scholarly work, including her PhD thesis, The role of peer connection in Australian general practice, reflects the commitment to collaboration and professional connection that has defined her career.
