Two men have been arrested after they were caught breaking into a business, stealing a bobcat and fleeing in two stolen vehicles through Melbourne’s northwest overnight.
Police received a report that offenders were using an angle grinder to force open the gate to a business on Little Boundary Lane in Laverton North about 1.45am.
Officers found the business on a local city camera, where they saw a truck and a ute pulling away from the premises.
A few minutes later, Air Wing spotted the two vehicles, a Fuso tow truck and a Mitsubishi Triton, travelling in convoy towards Derrimut.
The duo didn’t know they were being followed and made time to pull into a fast-food restaurant carpark on the Western Ring Road.
With Air Wing monitoring from above, police units on the ground approached the car park and deployed stop sticks near the exit to the freeway.
The men attempted to leave the carpark in both vehicles, but the truck soon came to a stop.
The driver dumped the truck and got into the utility, which continued along Western Highway and Fitzgerald Road.
Shortly afterwards, the utility pulled over on the side of Boundary Road in Truganina.
The two men got out of the car, police swooped in and arrested them both without incident.
The 42-year-old and the 49-year-old, both from Werribee, were taken into custody to be interviewed.
The Fuso tow truck and Mitsubishi Triton utility were both confirmed to be stolen.
Police also located a bobcat, stolen from the equipment hire business, inside one of the vehicles.
