Two officers charged in Southern Region

Two police officers will face court over an incident in the state’s south last year.

On Monday 26 November 2018, an off-duty male sergeant intervened in an incident where a man was acting aggressively towards a store manager in an Albury shopping centre.

The man threatened the sergeant with a knife, forcing him to defend himself and strike the man, before retreating with the store manager.

The man fled the area on a bicycle, before being arrested a short time later in Young Street.

It is alleged the off-duty sergeant and an on-duty male constable both assaulted the man after he had been arrested.

Following an independent internal investigation, the two officers were served Future Court Attendance Notices for common assault.

They are both due to appear at Deniliquin Local Court on Tuesday 22 October 2019.
