Two people charged after drugs, firearm allegedly seized – Cumborah

A man has faced court today after drugs, a firearm and ammunition were allegedly seized in the state’s remote north-west yesterday.

Officers attached to Central North Police District executed a Firearm Prohibition Order/Weapon Prohibition Order search at a remote residential mineral claim at Cumborah about 10.45am yesterday (Thursday 30 April 2026).

During a search of a caravan onsite, police allegedly located and seized cannabis, shotgun shells, and .22 calibre rounds of ammunition.

Whilst searching a second caravan police allegedly found methylamphetamine, cannabis, an unregistered .22 calibre bolt-action rifle, and .22 calibre ammunition.

Police arrested a 48-year-old man and took him to Walgett Police Station, where he was charged with six offences:

  • Possess prohibited drug (two counts),
  • Possess unregistered firearm-not pistol/prohibited firearm,
  • Possess unauthorised firearm,
  • Not keep firearm safely-not pistol/prohibited firearm, and
  • Possess ammunition w/o holding licence/permit/authority,

He was refused bail and faced Bail Division Court 4 today (Friday 1 May 2026), where he was granted conditional bail to appear before Walgett Local Court on Monday 11 May 2026.

Police also issued a 45-year-old man a Field Court Attendance notice for the alleged offences of possess prohibited drug and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, to face Lightning Ridge Local Court on Wednesday 27 May 2026.
