UC leading way in eliminating gender and diversity bias

The University of Canberra has been recognised for its efforts to critically assess gender equity and diversity within the University after gaining the internationally recognised Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award as part of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) initiative in Adelaide overnight.

The award recognises UC’s commitment to advancing the careers of women, trans and gender diverse individuals in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine – STEMM disciplines.

The findings of the submission process included many areas where UC is excelling in its journey to gender equity, including that (at time of submission), three of the six senior executive roles are held by women, 51 per cent of STEMM academic staff are female, and 46 per cent of senior leaders are women.

“The University of Canberra is proud to be recognised among the Australian higher education landscape achieving this award,” said Professor Geoff Crisp, Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President Academic.

“The University is committed to putting our institution at the forefront of diversity practice and to ensure our workplace and community is more inclusive and supportive.”

UC joins 45 Australian higher education and research institutions who have completed the SAGE pathway to accreditation.

“The bronze award recognises an institution’s work to set solid foundations for their journey to transformative change and sets them on the course to Silver and Gold awards,” said SAGE Executive Director, Dr Wafa El-Adhami.

Established in 2015, SAGE is a partnership between the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.
