UNITAR to Hold Online Conference on Digitalization

Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR Division for Prosperity is hosting an online conference “Closing the Digital Divide: Strengthening Digital Literacy and Infrastructure in the Sahel Region, Iraq and Afghanistan”. The conference will explore trends in digital transformation and the digital divide and how we can foster a sustainable digital transformation for all.

The virtual conference will be held on 24 March 2022 from 10 a.m. to 3.40 p.m. CET (UTC+1). It will be in English and French.

Digital transformation has accelerated in recent years, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic. Access to digital infrastructure and digital literacy is essential to our “new normal,” to carry out daily activities in business and education.

While access to digital infrastructure has improved in the past years, 2.9 billion people are still offline – 96 per cent of them in the developing world. Even those with access often lack the skills to make the most out of digital devices and services.

We must therefore close the digital divide by strengthening both digital infrastructure and digital literacy around the world.

The conference will have three sessions:

· Importance of digital transformation for sustainable prosperity – a global perspective on accessibility, literacy and inclusion

· Overcoming the digital divide and “leave no one behind” in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Sahel region

· Challenges and opportunities encountered in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Sahel region

Regional and global panelists will share their expertise in digitalization and technologies.

UNITAR will also share its experience with digital upskilling and reskilling programmes in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Sahel region.

UNITAR invests in developing high-quality learning solutions for individuals, communities and institutions to overcome digital discrimination and achieve the 2030 Agenda.
