UNITAR Trained Public Officials at 11th International Road Federation Caribbean Regional Congress

Nassau, Bahamas – UNITAR delivered a workshop on its Management Practices for Safer Roads Toolkit in the framework of the 11th IRF Caribbean Regional Congress in Nassau, Bahamas held from 13 to 16 June 2023.

This year’s Congress “A Roadmap to a Safe, Inclusive, and Resilient Transport System” aimed at bringing solutions and discussing best practices to address the common challenges that the region faces, from road safety to climate resilience to the infrastructure needs that a new and electrified vehicle fleet will demand. The Congress gathered government officials, relevant private sector members, civil society, and academia involved in the management of road safety globally.

UNITAR has participated in previous iterations of the Congress, i.e., the 10th IRF Congress in Barbados, due to its global and regional relevance.

This year UNITAR trained 43 government officials and public sector members from 8 countries in the Caribbean region, including Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Cayman Islands, St. Lucia, Suriname, Barbados, and Belize.

During the workshop, participants were introduced to the “Management Practices for Safer Roads Toolkit” and its methodology to provide training on:

  • Collecting data on the number and location of deaths by road user type.
  • Identifying hazardous and critical road locations and sections where excessive numbers or severity of crashes occur.
  • Outlining corrective measures.
  • Implementing interventions and monitoring results.

UNITAR will also participate in two executive sessions in the IRF Congress on “Safer, Reslient & More Inclusive City Streets: Protecting the Most Vulnerable” and “Leveraging Technology Advances for Safer Roads” where best practices of the application of the “Management Practices for Safer Roads Toolkit” in India and China will be shared with the participants.
