Universities congratulate new education minister 31 May

Universities Australia congratulates Jason Clare on his appointment as Minister for Education, chief executive Catriona Jackson said.

“We look forward to working closely with Minister Clare and the Albanese Government to ensure all Australians can access a world-class education and realise their full potential.

“Minister Clare understands that universities are an essential part of an optimistic, productive, modern economy and society.

“The nation is facing some big challenges, but it can also seize big opportunities. Universities are ready to play their part.

“As a nation we need more education and knowledge – not less, and more skilled graduates – not fewer, to fulfil the needs of a modern economy and society.

“Universities help meet the increasing demand for highly skilled people and conduct the research that underpins Australia’s prosperity, competitiveness and security.

“Universities played a central role in navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. From epidemiologists and engineers to economists and ethicists, our university experts have partnered with the community to help Australia grapple with huge challenges.

“Universities can help address the skills shortages for degree-educated workers – from nurses to teachers, to data analysts and artificial intelligence engineers.

“We can help tackle the challenge of climate and energy transition and avoid the huge economic and social disruption of such a shift.

“We can help find ways to navigate through a challenging geopolitical landscape and the sensitivities in our region.

“We also congratulate Senator Anthony Chisholm on his appointment as Assistant Minister for Education.

“Universities look forward to working with Minister Clare and the government so we can maximise our contribution to the nation.”
