University rises to third place in latest Times Higher Education Asia-Pacific rankings

The University of Melbourne has been ranked third in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Asia-Pacific Rankings, which were released last night.

The University of Melbourne has been ranked third in the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) Asia-Pacific Rankings, which were released last night. The University was fourth in last year’s rankings.

The University remains the top ranked institution in Australia. Overall, Tsinghua University in China and the National University of Singapore are the top two ranked institutions.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell said the latest ranking showed improved scores in several indicators, including teaching, which reflected the University’s focus on improving the student experience.

“The University has and will continue to invest in a range of things that give our students the best possible experience. For example, our curriculum; our academic staff; libraries; the support services available to students; and the diverse student accommodation we offer,” Professor Maskell said.

“The University is also investing significantly in infrastructure to support education. Three new academic buildings will open this year including a Conservatorium of Music and two state-of-the-art life sciences teaching buildings at the Parkville Campus and the Werribee campus. Plus, the Student Precinct project will provide our students with wonderful facilities where they can go to for student services.

“Rather than looking at teaching in isolation, it is one of a number of things we are focused on that are contributing to an improved student experience.”

Professor Maskell also welcomed the University’s improved score for the proportion of its revenue derived from industry.

“Establishing, maintaining and growing teaching and research links with industry and other partners including Government and the not-for-profit sector is a priority for the University,” Professor Maskell said.

“The University will continue to work collaboratively with industry and build partnerships that are mutually beneficial. We’re already doing it, but there is a lot of opportunity out there and we want to do more.”
