Northern Territory Police’s newest Drug Detection Dog, Uno, has continued his impressive start on the job, helping officers uncover almost half a kilogram of cannabis, 17-edged weapons and suspected stolen property during a targeted operation in Pine Creek yesterday.
About 12pm, members from the Katherine Dog Operations Unit, supported by Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch detectives, General Duties and Intelligence officers, executed a search warrant at a Town Camp property under section 120B of the Police Administration Act 1978.
As officers entered the property, a 51-year-old man was located inside a campervan. Drug Detection Dog Uno was deployed and quickly provided several positive indications, leading police to locate and seize:
- Approximately 450 grams of cannabis;
- Three grams of gold nuggets, believed to be the proceeds of crime;
- Seventeen edged weapons, including three prohibited weapons;
- Approximately $780 in cash; and
- Items consistent with the supply of illicit drugs.
The 51-year-old Pine Creek man was issued with a Notice to Appear and charged with:
- Possess Traffickable Quantity of Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug;
- Supply Less than Commercial Quantity of Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug (Indigenous Community); and
- Receive Property Commission of Offence.
He is expected to appear in Katherine Local Court at a later date.
Acting Senior Sergeant Mat Unwin said every seizure like this helps reduce the harm caused by illicit drugs and keeps our communities safer.
“With the assistance of Drug Detection Dog Uno, officers located a significant quantity of cannabis, prohibited weapons and property believed to be linked to criminal offending.
“We’ll continue acting on information from the public and targeting those involved in the supply of dangerous drugs across the Katherine region.”
