Construction to extend Canberra’s light rail network from the city to Commonwealth Park is continuing ahead of the first services to the new city stops starting in early 2028.
To support the safe delivery of these works, sections of Northbourne Avenue will temporarily close to motorists and pedestrians in off-peak times in October and early November.
Upcoming works are also planned on Commonwealth Avenue. To support these works, Commonwealth Avenue northbound will temporarily be reduced to one lane between Albert Street and Vernon Circle. The light rail network will be replaced by buses from the first service on Saturday 31 October to the last service on Sunday 1 November.
These closures will enable essential works on Light Rail Stage 2A, including the partial reopening of London Circuit East in coming weeks. Main construction works are expected to be completed in early 2027 followed by testing and commissioning.
Future closures are expected later this year, with the community to be advised of specifics closer to the date.
Northbourne Avenue traffic changes
Northbourne Avenue will be closed in both directions between Vernon Circle and Cooyong Street/Barry Drive from:
- 8pm Friday 16 October to 6am Monday 19 October
- 8pm Friday 23 October to 6am Monday 26 October.
Local access will be maintained between Alinga Street and Cooyong Street/Barry Drive.
These closures are essential to allow for asphalting, traffic barrier setup and removal, and the clean-up and reinstatement of the site.
Northbourne Avenue will be closed southbound between Bunda Street and Alinga Street from 1am-5am, Sunday 1 November.
