Northern Territory Police have arrested a male in relation to a hit and run fatal crash in Nhulunbuy on 26 November 2023.
After receiving information from the public, detectives yesterday attended a remote community where a 46-year-old male was arrested.
The vehicle, now believed to have been involved, was already seized by local police for an unrelated matter last week and been forensically examined.
He has been charged with:
- Hit and run cause death
- Drive dangerously during pursuit
- Drive unlicensed
The male was bailed to appear in court on 14 February 2024.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said “this was a significant effort not only from Major Crash and Major Crime detectives and local police, but also from the Nhulunbuy community.
“Their dedication to helping the investigation has not gone unnoticed. Through their assistance in providing information and CCTV we have successfully made an arrest.
“Engaging in a hit and run is not only illegal, but also morally reprehensible. Leaving the scene of a crash demonstrates a disregard for human life and the well-being of others.
“Northern Territory Police use investigative techniques to track down individuals who commit such crimes, ensuring that justice prevails. You will be caught and you will face court if you fail to render assistance after a crash.
“Fleeing the scene of a crash is a poor choice that impacts not only the victim but also the lives of the victim’s loved ones who are left to deal with the aftermath.”
