Updated Direction for gatherings – COVID-19 Direction, South Australia

The Emergency Management (Gatherings) (COVID-19) Direction 2020 is revoked and replaced by the Emergency Management (Gatherings No 2) (COVID-19) Direction 2020. This new Direction takes effect on 16 April 2020.

The new Direction updates the list of gatherings that are not included as prohibited gatherings under the direction.

In general a gathering of 10 people or more people or a gathering of 10 people or less that does not comply with the 1 person per 4 square metres rule is prohibited at any location, either indoors or outdoors in this state.

However, under the updated Direction, those who ordinarily reside in premises with 10 or more people are able to continue residing together in those premises.

The updated Direction also adds the following gatherings to the list of gatherings that are not to be regarded as being prohibited;

  • A gathering at a disability, aged care or residential care facility (including a supported residential facility or a child protection facility) that is necessary for the normal business of the facility.
  • A gathering at an office building, factory, laboratory or testing facility, repair or maintenance premises (such as a vehicle mechanic workshop), mining or construction site or waste disposal or processing facility that is necessary for the normal operation of those premises.
  • A gathering on land or a vessel used in the production or treatment of primary produce (within the meaning of the Primary Produce (Food Safety Schemes) Act 2004) that is necessary for normal operations on the land or vessel.

It is important to understand when gathering, even those not considered to be in a prohibited gathering must make every effort to keep 1.5 metres away from each other and not exceed the density requirement of 1 person per 4 square metres.
