The Andrews Labor Government is planning for a stronger and more vibrant Preston Market Precinct − securing jobs, creating green spaces and delivering new homes while protecting what makes the precinct so special.
Minister for Planning Richard Wynne today released the updated draft Preston Market Precinct Structure Plan, with protections for the fresh food market and stronger height limits.
Under the new draft plan the Government is ensuring a sustainable Preston Market Precinct with new jobs and homes − including affordable housing – along with new community facilities and improved transport connections.
The new draft plan has been shaped by extensive consultation with the community following the release of the initial draft in 2021.
Community feedback has led to a reduction in building heights and the number of homes in the precinct − creating a more open and light-filled precinct with high quality open space and stronger transport connections allowing the community to walk or cycle through the precinct.
Strong protections for the market have been retained – meaning any future development must include a fresh food market of equal or greater size.
The existing fruit and vegetable shed will remain in its current location, and the market’s character will be protected by a heritage overlay.
The Preston Market Precinct is strategically located next to existing and vital infrastructure, including the new Preston Station, St George’s Road and High Street.
Planning for sustainable growth in the precinct while protecting the neighbourhood’s unique character is essential to tackle urban sprawl and housing affordability for Victoria’s growing population.
The new draft plan will be considered by the Projects Standing Advisory Committee and will be subject to further community consultation.
