Upgrading Ferntree Gully intersection

Vic Department of Transport

The Victorian Government is improving safety at a busy intersection in Melbourne’s east with traffic lights to be installed and pedestrian crossings to be added in Ferntree Gully.

The 2022/23 Victorian Budget is investing $30 million to upgrade the intersection at Burwood Highway, McMahons Road and Clyde Street to reduce the risk of crashes and keep pedestrians safe.

The project is part of the $125.7 million Metropolitan Road Upgrades Program which will deliver eight high priority road upgrades across Melbourne to build a safer and more resilient network, create jobs and connect people to employment, education, and the activities they enjoy.

The signalised pedestrian crossing will boost safety for pedestrians by providing them a safe passage across Burwood Highway.

Cars using the intersection, especially those turning right onto Burwood Highway, will also benefit from the new traffic lights.

Over a five-year period, four crashes were recorded at the intersection including one serious injury.

The upgrade will increase traffic capacity and accommodate future increases in traffic and pedestrian volumes caused by population growth in the area.

Design and planning work on the Burwood Highway, McMahons Road and Clyde Street intersection upgrade is expected to commence later this year.

The 2022/23 Victorian Budget is also funding planning work for future road upgrades across the state’s growing outer suburbs.
