Upskill your potential with Learn Local

Signing up for a Learn Local course could provide you with the skills you need to study, work, and live the life you want.

The Learn Local initiative is government-subsidised short courses offered at low or no cost to eligible adult Victorians.

Sandybeach Centre is one of our six Council-funded community centres and the only provider of Learn Local in Bayside.

Centre coordinator Leanne Fink advocates for the individual and community benefits of engaging in a Learn Local course.

“The structured and educational guidelines of Learn Local are not only beneficial for the person and community – but connection to the safe space of a community centre promotes social skills and boosts the learners’ confidence,” Leanne said.

This all points to improving job skills and increasing the participants’ chances of forging new career paths.

“We also have programs for people with disabilities to improve their skills and quality of life. These include cooking, gardening, literacy and numeracy, and computer skills for absolute beginners.”

Registrations for courses in Term 1 of 2024 are now open – and your participation will greatly improve your chances to switch careers, learn new skills and meet likeminded learners in Bayside.

The 2024 course guide will follow a similar pathway to the 2023 program, which included:

  • Digital literacy training
  • Language, literacy and numeracy skills
  • English language classes
  • Financial literacy skills
  • Employability skills
  • Writing skills
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Industry-specific training across health, disability, retail, tourism, hospitality, construction, trades, business, call centres, horticulture and other sectors.

Courses are usually between 20 and 60 hours, but some Learn Local providers also offer shorter courses, designed to re-engage learners.

Learn Local courses are continually being developed and offered across Victoria.
