UQ leads Australasia for commercialisation revenue and startup equity value

University of Queensland

The University of Queensland has been ranked the leading Australasian university for commercialisation revenue and the value of equity held in startups and spinouts in the latest Survey of Commercialisation Outcomes from Public Research (SCOPR).

The annual survey, conducted by Knowledge Commercialisation Australasia (KCA), benchmarks how public research organisations translate discoveries into commercial outcomes including startup creation, licensing agreements and industry partnerships.

The result reflects a strong period of research translation through UQ’s commercialisation arm UniQuest, with discoveries progressing through a range of pathways to create new companies, attract investment and deliver technologies with the potential to benefit industry and the community.

UniQuest CEO Dr Dean Moss said the result highlighted the strength of UQ’s research and innovation ecosystem.

“These outcomes reflect the quality of research being developed at UQ and the commitment of researchers, industry partners, investors and commercialisation specialists to turning great ideas into products, companies and solutions,” Dr Moss said.

“Whether through licensing, startup creation or industry partnerships, our role is to work alongside researchers to identify pathways that help their innovations reach their full potential.”

Behind UQ’s SCOPR results are hundreds of conversations between researchers, industry partners, investors and commercialisation specialists. Together, they represent companies launched, technologies licensed, partnerships formed and discoveries progressing beyond the laboratory.

UQ’s commercialisation activity spans biotechnology, therapeutics, advanced computing, cybersecurity, clean technology and resources, with recent ventures including Vicebio, Andara Therapeutics, Curlew Bio, Cortisonic, VeriQuantix, Banksia Mineral Processing and Evimien Energy.

UniQuest works alongside researchers to protect intellectual property, assess commercial opportunities and connect innovations with industry, investors and partners. The company helps researchers navigate pathways that can take discoveries from the laboratory to market.

In further news, UQ spin-out Ceretas was recognised at the 2026 KCA Awards for Best Spin-Out for commercialising a novel therapeutic ultrasound platform for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
