The Tasmanian Government extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and former colleagues of the Honourable Donald George Wing AM.
Mr Wing’s passing marks the loss of a dedicated community leader whose contribution to Launceston and Tasmania spanned decades of parliamentary, civic and charitable service.
First elected to the Legislative Council in 1982, he represented the people of Launceston and Paterson for 29 years before retiring in 2011.
As President of the Legislative Council from 2002 to 2008, Don dutifully guided the Council’s proceedings, upholding its important role in Tasmania’s democracy.
A lawyer before entering Parliament, Mr Wing devoted much of his life to public service, bringing his experience and independent perspective to the issues facing our State.
Retirement from Parliament did not end that commitment. Through community organisations, boards and charitable causes, he continued to give his time and energy to helping others.
Mr Wing leaves a substantial legacy of service to Northern Tasmania and provides a shining example of the contribution a person can make over a lifetime.
Don was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.
We acknowledge that contribution with deep gratitude, and our thoughts are with all those mourning his loss.
