Victorian firefighters to assist with NSW fires

CFA and MFB firefighters are travelling to New South Wales today to help fight the Busby Fire.

This Victorian contingent of 21 people is predominantly operational firefighters who will form a strike team. There is also a team leader and aircraft specialist going.

With several large bushfires raging across NSW, our firefighters have been requested to assist with the fire activity in and around Busbys Flat which has burnt more than 50,000 hectares and destroyed homes.

CFA Chief Executive Officer and Chief Officer Steve Warrington said our crews will work hard to support our partner agencies in NSW during this challenging time.

“These devastating fires have seen properties lost and communities under threat so we are pleased to share these resources and much needed support with our interstate colleagues,” CEO/CO Warrington said.

MFB Acting Chief Executive Officer /Chief Officer David Bruce said the thoughts of all Victorians are with affected families and impacted neighbours in NSW.

“Victorians know all-too-well the devastating impacts of these types of fires, and I’m proud that our firefighters can share their invaluable expertise to assist with the response and recovery effort in these communities,” Acting CEO/CO Bruce said.

The crews will travel to Casino today, via Sydney, and be deployed in the field for three days before returning home to Victoria on Saturday.

Over the last month Victoria has sent over 50 people to NSW at various times to assist our colleagues with these challenging fires.

These personnel have assisted in a varied and specialist positions and have worked hard under difficult conditions.

This Victorian contingent includes:

  • 19 firefighters from CFA
  • Two Commanders from MFB
