Victorian squad named for opening Sheffield Shield clash

Victoria has named a 13-player squad for its opening Marsh Sheffield Shield match against South Australia starting on Thursday.

The squad will travel to Adelaide to play at Karen Rolton Oval.

If selected, it would be a First-Class debut for Fergus O’Neill. The bowling all-rounder represents Melbourne in Victorian Premier Cricket and has played one List-A match, representing Victoria against Western Australia in March 2022.

Nic Maddinson completed his English County Cricket commitments earlier this week, returning home from Durham after a strong finish to the season.

Cricket Victoria’s Head of Male Cricket, David Hussey said:

“After going so close in the Sheffield Shield last season, everyone is excited to get the red ball season started. We’ve had to make some hard decisions selecting this squad, but we feel like we have a well-balanced 13 to take to South Australia.

“The squad has a few different options, we’ll assess the conditions when we arrive to which way the final XI is selected.

“Having Marcus Harris and Nic Maddinson back around the squad after their stints in England has been fantastic, they have been working hard on their games and we expect them to play a major role for us this season.”
