Visiting Scholar Collaborates with School of Education

The University of Notre Dame Australia is thrilled to announce the arrival of Dr Maulina – a distinguished Visiting Scholar from Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari in Indonesia who will join the School of Education.

Dr. Maulina will join the school from September to November 2023, supporting the University’s efforts to establish international cross-institutional relationships.

Her visit marks a continuation of her academic journey in Australia, where she will be collaborating with Professor David Geelan on academic writing and gaining valuable experience in Australian higher education.

Speaking of the connection between the two universities, Dr Maulina emphasised the potential for future cross-institutional work, saying “I represent my university, Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari, in extending our hand towards a long-lasting collaboration with the distinguished University of Notre Dame Australia. Our research will contribute significantly to the global academic discourse.”

Dr. Maulina currently serves as an Assistant Professor of English at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari, where she has contributed significantly to the field of English language education.

Her previous collaboration with National Head of the School of Education Professor David Geelan at Griffith University in the Gold Coast in 2019 resulted in a jointly authored paper that explored the innovative use of WhatsApp for mobile learning of English by Indonesian students.

During the challenging times of the COVID pandemic, Dr. Maulina demonstrated her commitment to academic exchange by hosting a Zoom webinar for her Indonesian colleagues.

This webinar, titled ‘STEM Education Research for Innovation in Disruptive Times,’ featured a presentation by Professor Geelan. The event exemplified the international collaboration and knowledge sharing that transcends borders, even in the face of global challenges.

Dr. Maulina’s visit to Notre Dame has been made possible through a prestigious grant program administered by the Directorate for Resources, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Republic of Indonesia.

Among more than 200 applicants, Dr. Maulina emerged as one of only 12 successful recipients of this esteemed grant. Her selection reflects not only her outstanding academic achievements but also the proven track record of successful research collaboration and publication between Dr. Maulina and Professor Geelan.

During her tenure at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Dr. Maulina and Professor David Geelan will be embarking on a new research endeavor.

They will focus on the development of a groundbreaking paper centered on mobile learning with WhatsApp, specifically targeting special-purposes English instruction for Indonesian students majoring in Economics.

Additionally, Dr. Maulina will engage with staff at other universities in New South Wales, explore the vibrant city of Melbourne, and actively participate in class sessions, research activities, discussions with faculty, and School of Education meetings.

The University of Notre Dame Australia warmly welcomes Dr. Maulina and looks forward to a period of fruitful collaboration and knowledge exchange between Dr. Maulina and the academic community.

Her presence reinforces the University’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and promoting excellence in education.
