  • The WA Government welcomes the Federal Government’s Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.

The Royal Commission has been announced following extensive advocacy from the veteran community, and it is hoped the recommendations will result in stronger support for Defence personnel and veterans.

The commission will examine all aspects of service in the Australian Defence Force including those transitioning from active service, existing health and support services, social and family contexts, common themes and systemic issues.

The McGowan Government is significantly increasing funding to the Veterans Issues portfolio to support local veterans and their families transition to civilian life and become part of a sustained, skilled and experienced workforce for the local defence industry and other sectors.

The consultation period for the Terms of Reference closes on Friday May 21, 2021.

The WA Government will work with the Commonwealth throughout the consultation process and when the Royal Commission is established.

As stated by Veterans Issues Minister Paul Papalia:

“Advocates have been calling for a Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide for years, and the WA Government welcomes this announcement.

“The rate of suicide in our Defence and veteran community is a tragedy, and I encourage people to participate in this process so we can enhance our understanding of the issue and reinforce our support for those who need it most.

“The WA Government supports the Royal Commission and we will continue to work closely with the Federal Government to facilitate this important process.”
