The country’s peak body for public health applauds the work done by the WA Police Minister and WA Government on improving state gun laws with a focus on protecting Western Australians.
The WA Government is today releasing a paper outlining proposed new legislation which will include a limit on the number of guns an individual can own, as well as stringent storage conditions.
“A simple truth is that the fewer guns in any community, the less the chance of gun violence,” Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) CEO, Adj. Prof Terry Slevin, said.
“The 1996 National Firearms Agreement – updated in 2017 – was only ever a minimum standard, which most jurisdictions have still yet to meet.
“We look forward to examining the detail in the Firearm Bill Consultation Paper.
“But we are optimistic that this will set a new benchmark for gun safety laws in Australia for other the States and Territories to follow.”
