Walkers Lake water cleared of contamination

Testing of the water at Walkers Lake has revealed the water is safe for recreational use.

The lake was subject to a severe blue-green algae bloom late last year and earlier this year which stripped dissolved oxygen from the water.

As a result of the decreased oxygen levels in the water, many fish were the unfortunate victims of the dire water conditions.

Since the fishkill event earlier this month, council has conducted testing on the lake water alongside an assessment by Fisheries Victoria and Environmental Protection Authority

Results of the testing have come back within acceptable levels so council is pleased to be able to reopen the lake to recreational activities.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Murray Emerson, said the reopening of the lake is great news.

“It is a shame that conditions at Walkers Lake led to the fishkill event but it’s wonderful to announce the lake is back open for business and the water is safe again,” he said.

Warning signs will be removed from the lake in the coming days.
