The Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive Interchange project is rapidly taking shape with a massive beam installation undertaken over the weekend.
Over the weekend of November 22-25, construction crews worked around the clock to install 16 new bridge beams to support the new overpass on Joondalup Drive.
In the coming months, the deck will be installed on the bridge, which is expected to carry traffic from April onwards. This will be followed by an upgrade of the temporary roundabout at the intersection, with the project on track for completion in mid-2020.
The Interchange will provide immediate safety benefits and predictable journey times for all road users. This will in turn, support current and projected levels of traffic resulting from residential and industrial development in Perth’s northern suburbs.
The project also includes three significant local road upgrades, which will get underway in January 2020.
A new roundabout at Joondalup Drive and Cheriton Drive will improve local traffic flow and access to the suburb of Carramar, while a fully signalised intersection at Wanneroo Road and Clarkson Avenue will provide safe and reliable access to the Drovers Business Precinct.
Modifications to the Burns Beach Road Roundabout, co-funded by the City of Joondalup, will also improve safety and reduce queuing times at a congested intersection on the approach to the Mitchell Freeway.
This project joins a series of other transformations under construction in the northern suburbs, including the METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension that started works this week.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
“The McGowan Government made an election commitment to fix these issues and it’s fantastic to see progress being made.
“Together with a new Interchange at Ocean Reef Road and the new dual carriageway north of Joondalup Drive, we are progressively removing bottlenecks from Wanneroo Road.
“Meanwhile, other transformational projects like our METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension, are also now underway.
“These works will provide safer, more efficient journeys for residents and commuters in our northern suburbs.”
