Warburton Tree update 5 April 2023

Council is continuing to plan the next steps in managing risk around the large tree in the Warburton Recreation Reserve carpark.

There is no question that this significant tree is unsafe and poses a risk to the community. This cannot be ignored, and there are initial works that need to happen urgently to manage public safety on the site.

We have received feedback to consider alternatives to complete removal, and we are genuinely committed to doing this. In the immediate term, however, what we do know is that ignoring the current structural risks with the tree is not an option.

Works that will bring the tree down a significant amount are a critical first step and are required to be undertaken urgently. Timber that has not rotted will be preserved, and seeds will be collected where possible.

Once this urgent make safe work has been completed, we can more fully turn our minds to the options available, including consideration of habitat value and re-designing the space around the tree.

These works would also reduce the safety exclusion zone currently in place and open up more carpark for the community, noting that a smaller fenced exclusion zone is still required to manage risk to the public.

The remaining portion of tree will continue to be fenced while thorough assessment of options and impacts is completed, including options asked of Council over the past weeks specific to tree retention. We will continue to keep community updated.

It is acknowledged this is an important and complex matter and Council is committed to properly assessing options that might be available to retain habitat and to honour the significance and history of this tree. Ultimately what this looks like needs further consideration and time.

Council formally advises it will not conduct works beyond critical safety needs advised above, until all aspects of this matter are properly considered.
