The top performers in Western Australia’s recycling and waste industry were acknowledged last night at the 2021 WasteSorted Awards.
Previously known as the Infinity Awards, the annual event – run by the Waste Authority – acknowledges innovative people and projects that work to avoid waste, recover value from waste streams and protect the environment.
This year, 40 finalists competed across 10 categories, and showcased the achievements of individuals, businesses, government, schools, community organisations, not-for-profits and media outlets.
Some of the innovative projects that took away top honours were:
- Australia’s first asphalt product containing high-recycled content from waste streams bound for landfill, which saw company Downer take out both the Community Waste Award and the Waste Management Award;
- An innovative pool cover recycling program – believed to be the first of its kind in Australia – run by the Town of Cambridge, Green Machines Lab, Poly Pipe Recycling and Aussie Pool Covers – which won Waste Innovation of the Year;
- The benchmark Regional Resource Recovery Centre run by the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council, which has shown outstanding commitment to community waste reduction and reuse and recycling for 20 years – which earned the 2021 WA Waste Award.
The 2021 Waste Initiative of the Year category was shared by joint recipients – the City of Bunbury, for its public FOGO bins program, and DevelopmentWA, for its promotion of environmental principles at all stages of its OneOneFive Hamilton Hill project.

The WasteSorted awards are now named for the State Government’s WasteSorted campaign, launched last year to provide simple, clear messages to the community about how to deal with household waste and improve recycling outcomes.

As stated by Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
“Each of this year’s 40 finalists exemplifies an innovative solution to reduce waste, and promote reuse and recycling.
“They also assist the State Government in its goal to promote a cleaner, more sustainable environment in Western Australia, with at least 75 per cent of waste generated our State reused or recycled by 2030.
“I commend each of the 2021 WasteSorted Awards winners, finalists and entrants for their commitment to achieving reductions in waste and an increase in resource recovery.”
