Residents in Charlotte Bay and Smiths Lake can look forward to a more reliable water supply when a lengthy section of water main along The Lakes Way is upgraded.
Beginning in late August, contractors working for MidCoast Council will replace around five kilometres of water main along the eastern side of The Lakes Way between Boomerang Drive at Pacific Palms and Macwood Road at Smiths Lake.
The existing pipes have been prone to breaks and required frequent maintenance.
Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said the project will improve the reliability of the local water supply.
“With Charlotte Bay and Smiths Lake right at the southern end of our Manning Water Supply System, it’s important that the infrastructure in the area is resilient and dependable,” said Mr Scott.
“By upgrading this stretch of main, we’re going to reduce the likelihood of customers in the area experiencing unplanned interruptions to their water supply, which is obviously beneficial to them, but also beneficial to us because we won’t have to invest so much in maintenance there.”
The project is expected to begin near the Macwood Road intersection and progress north along The Lakes Way to the intersection with Boomerang Drive. Work will also be completed along the first 800 metres of Macwood Road.
Traffic control will be in place from early to mid-September, with both The Lakes Way and the impacted section of Macwood Road reduced to a single lane while the project is underway. Residents in the area are advised to allow extra travel time to account for the modified road conditions.
Some planned interruptions to the water supply may be required throughout the project; however, Council will advise residents when these are scheduled to occur.
The project is expected to be completed by April 2027.
