In response to a number of complaints about recreational mud crabbing, members from the Northern Territory Police Water Police Section have been targeting local boat ramps over the last week.
“Information received is that persons were over-potting, taking too many crabs and exceeding the bag limits and not having their floats clearly marked,” Senior Constable Sean Stanley said.
As a result of the operation, two men aged 24 and 46 have each received a Notice to Appear for not marking their floats.
A 62-year-old male was found in possession of four sawfish rostrums and has been charged under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act for possession of a protected species and was issued a Notice to Appear.
A 52-year-old male was issued a Marine Infringement Notice for failing to have the required safety gear.
Senior Constable Sean Stanley said the Water Police Section will continue to adopt a zero tolerance approach to all fisheries offences.
“The Northern Territory has the best fishing in Australia and we need to look after our environment.”
