Water Quality Threats 18 October

MDBA

The likelihood of water quality issues increases under warming conditions.

Key water quality issues:

  • Harmful algal blooms: Algae can pose a risk to the health of humans, animals and the environment.

Blue-green algae levels are currently elevated across much of the Basin’s rivers/storages including in northern regions, mid-Murray systems, and in VIC’s central north.

A marine algal species remains present in SA’s Coorong but is not currently blooming.

Water quality within the Basin is monitored by individual States. Any site-specific alerts, warnings or advisories are issued by those respective States.
