The City has welcomed the release of the Victorian Government’s consultation summary for the Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and Bannockburn Bus Network Review, with the significant community response confirming the need for modern, reliable and accessible public transport across our region.
We’re now looking forward to seeing the final report, trusting the recommendations will clearly map out the long-term future of Geelong’s bus network, including the future of the Moorabool Street bus interchange and proposed city loop in central Geelong, alongside better rail services.
According to the consultation summary, released by the Department of Transport and Planning on Monday, 3,787 surveys were completed, more than 250 conversations held at community pop-ups, and 49 submissions were received from businesses and organisations – including the City of Greater Geelong and Youth Council.
The consultation summary identifies strong demand for more frequent buses, better connections between transport services, more direct routes and shorter travel times, better coverage for growing communities, real-time information and safety measures. This aligns with the City’s submission and our Integrated Comprehensive Transport Strategy, which is currently open for engagement.
The City is advocating for the existing Moorabool Street Bus Interchange to be removed and replaced with a central city bus loop, creating a more integrated and pedestrian-friendly approach to bus movements through the city centre. Importantly, all buses that currently travel through Moorabool Street would continue to stop at Geelong Station.
We note the summary reported mixed feedback regarding the future of the Moorabool Street interchange, but broad recognition that it remains one of Geelong’s longest-standing transport challenges. The City is seeking greater certainty and a clear direction from the Victorian Government so we can move forward with confidence.
With significant investment and activity already occurring in central Geelong and at the waterfront, the bus network should support the broader renewal of the city centre, that include housing developments, new hospital, major events, public art and lighting upgrades, night-time vibrancy initiatives, business support and activation of vacant spaces.
Quotes attributed to Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:
Our community has sent a very clear message that it cares deeply about the future of public transport in our region. This strong interest now needs to be met with a clear plan from the Department of Transport and Planning, including priority routes, an implementation timeline and clear next steps.
The future of Moorabool Street is an important part of this conversation. Our position remains firm – we want to see the existing interchange removed and replaced with a central city bus loop that works better for passengers, pedestrians, businesses and the broader revitalisation of central Geelong.
There is a lot riding on the final report. Once we know the direction of the future bus network, we can get on with making central Geelong a more vibrant, accessible and connected city centre. We urge the Victorian Government to release its recommendations as soon as possible so we can move from consultation to action.
